It is referred to as geriatric psychiatry and there is focus on the treatment of diseases, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, as well as depression. There is shortage across the nation of psychiatrists, even more so, psychiatric providers who specialize in treating older populations. Mental illness affects close to 15% of the older population. This number is a mere estimate, and doesn’t account for the untreated elders who do not have access to mental health services. In order to support our elderly loved ones as they approach end of life, it is important to educate ourselves on what they are truly going through so that we can be there for them as they have helped us throughout our life. |
Theories, religion, and society contribute different analysis of the human psyche. One thing about the human psyche that most can agree upon is that it is difficult to analyze our own personal condition without bias, in fact, it’s likely impossible. This bias is mitigated by the role of mental health professionals. We even attempt to eliminate this bias through friends and family. Most people are not aware of their actual condition, and others may have a measure of self-reflection, however, they may overlook certain aspects of their condition unknowingly. Self-reflection is not foolproof, which is why we must be willing to nuance our approach to the different challenges we will be presented with in life. |
You have to really go deep in understanding the depths of what you need to go into, and to have a method to be able to combat that.
What are your strengths and weaknesses? IDing what your weaknesses are and accepting them. Seeing them as things that you can work on, and are not simply failures are important as well. Also, you can track your progress to see that you are improving in a certain direction. It is important to recognize how far you have come, and IDing these things in the very beginning as well.
Also, have something when you are at your lowest points as an immediate need when you are getting back into your mental headspace. For example, if your GPS goes off track, you need to re-route as soon as possible. Similarly, if you are having massive anxiety, you need to be able to revert back as soon as possible. Do you walk away, do you grab a drink of water, do you pray, what is it that you do to get your mental health in a certain direction.
Do not leave your plan or your program that you developed for yourself. It does not end there when you feel "better", and you can go back into that very quickly. Life is filled with a consistent stream of challenges that may present themselves at any moment.
Belief plays a huge role in mental health.
Research has found that mental health and social interaction have a strong connection with one another.
It is a central part of an individual’s survival. Research has found that the neurotransmitters responsible for regulating stress and anxiety are typically released during these moments of social interaction.
We find that social interaction plays an important role in boosting and maintaining good physical and psychological health in an individual.
The Impact of Social Isolation on Mental Health
Social isolation is directly linked with many mental health illnesses and so we see the importance social interaction has upon overall wellbeing. A marked symptom of depression is social withdrawal. One risk factor we observe amongst individuals who commit mass shootings is social isolation. The effects of social isolation have a negative impact not only on the body but also the mind. Research finds that social isolation was linked to a higher release of cortisol in both men and women. Cortisol is a hormone the body produces in response to stress. If cortisol levels gets too high we
There is much talk over the usage of Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health.
Machine learning technology is another form of Artificial Intelligence technology and is now being implemented for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. This technology differs from the image-guided technology and seems to be more applicable to mental health diagnosis and treatment.
Artificial Intelligence companies are using machine learning technology to analyze large volumes of objective and subjective data and use this information to make reliable diagnosis of the patient's mental health condition. Many psychiatric conditions are co-occurring and so machine learning offers greater accuracy in the dual diagnosis of the various mental health conditions.
What is also interesting is our ability to analyze large volumes of data is much more practical than how it was years ago.
The key is to take the data fed into the database and determine what is the most useful to provide feedback to clinicians and to allow for them to make differences in patient lives. For instance, if you give data suggesting to a patient that they are depressed, that won't necessarily help them become "less" depressed. The data needs to help give solutions to the patients and so it plays a role in not only the diagnosis process but also with treatment options.
Machine learning technology also offers a cushion between physician-patient relationship. There has been a stigma surrounding psychiatry. Many individuals who are suffering from mental illness have often been stigmatized and felt shame with regards to seeking help. Through machine learning technology, patients experience a cushion between them and the physician, and this subconsciously encourages more truthful recounts of their symptoms from the patient. The patient is less likely to feel they are being judged and so this allows for more effective treatment options.
Mass Shooting Tragedies
The Mental Health of A Mass Shooter
Could there be psychiatric risk factors as well that can help bring us closer to understanding how and why these mass shootings occur?
Below are 6 risk factors that describe psychological characteristics commonly present among mass shooters.
These risk factors give us some insight into the mental health and psychological dynamics of these perpetrators of mass shootings, that the individuals that commit these crimes may not necessarily have a mental illness, however, the presence of these characteristics predict a potential for engaging in acts of violence.
6 Psychiatric Risk Factors
1. Social Isolation/Rejection
- They have no social support and feel a sense of alienation from others in society.
- They are often alone and feel generally rejected by others.
2. Narcissism
- They exhibit excessive selfishness and grandiosity.
- They will overestimate their abilities and hold their beliefs in very high esteem.
3. Self-Esteem Issues
- They often struggle with developing a healthy sense of self-esteem.
- Self-esteem regulates narcissism and because of the presence of high narcissism, a healthy sense of self-esteem is never achieved.
4. Persecutory Delusions/ Paranoia
- They may feel as though society as a whole is out to get them.
- They express general disgust towards society and views of hopelessness.
5. Suicidal Ideation
- They may struggle with past or present thoughts of suicidality.
6. Depression
- These individuals also may struggle with Major Depressive Disorder.
Considering All The Factors
It is important to open up the conversation and take into account the many aspects influencing these types of events so that we can work as a community to prevent these tragedies in the future.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects more than 3 million individuals in the United States each year.
ADHD is a psychiatric disorder marked by a combination of the following symptoms of Inattention, Hyperactivity, and Impulsivity:
- Easily distracted
- Difficulty concentrating on tasks
- Forgetful
- Interrupts others
- Feelings of restlessness
- Often fidgets
- Trouble with organizing tasks
- Talkative/ Repetitive speech
ADHD is typically treated with CNS stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta. These medications regulate the levels of dopamine neurotransmitters in the brain.
- Decreased appetite
- Weight loss
- High blood pressure
- Irritability
- Disrupted sleep
- Headaches
- Abdominal upset
- Nausea
Individuals suffering from ADHD who do not seek professional psychiatric treatment for their symptoms may self medicate or seek alternatives to the medications they have been prescribed.
Marijuana use for the treatment of ADHD is becoming more common, in particular amongst adolescents and young adults. Research regarding the effectiveness of marijuana for the treatment of ADHD is sparse.
A 2017 study found that short term THC exposure creates an increase in domaine neurotransmitters and brain activity, however, long term exposure weakens the brain's dopamine system.
This research suggests that occasional marijuana use my provide relief from some ADHD symptoms, however, with long term use it loses its effectiveness and may even worsen symptoms of ADHD.
An interesting aspect is that certain popular strains of medical marijuana seem to mimic the effects of the stimulant medications prescribed to treat ADHD
- Blue Dream
- Sour Diesel
- True OG
These strains contain different THC and Cannabinoid properties, however physical effects create:
- Uplifting sensations
- An increase in energy, creativity, and motivation
- An ability to focus on specific tasks
This is very helpful in the management of some symptoms for individuals suffering from ADHD. It is also important to note dosage plays an essential role. Taking into account current studies on the topic, it seems occasional use has more beneficial effects as opposed to chronic long term use, which may instead worsen symptoms.
Research exploring the connection between marijuana and ADHD is minimal so there aren't any definitive conclusions with regards to how marijuana can be used to treat ADHD, but it seems to be an avenue that will be further explored and it is possible that marijuana can be a useful treatment option for certain ADHD symptoms.

Home Court Advantage
Some viewers may be placing bets on who will advance to the next level and there are many aspects that go into determining which team has the best chances.
One aspect we find in not only basketball but many other sports is the "home court advantage."
The Mental State
You would think that people who are trained at the top level wouldn’t be affected by cheering or noise in a stadium, and would focus on what needs to be done.
Home Court Advantage in basketball is described as the sixth man, because it's like having another player assist the team. The sixth man is essentially the crowd cheering on and supporting the home team and this is an advantage for that team.
Yet, even the most professional of us are human. Even the best of us are fallible to human shortcoming and emotions.
Using the Home Court Advantage Mentality for Symptoms of Depression & Anxiety
Missing one point can be psychologically taxing, and the rest of the team is saying, “let it go, this happens, let's move forward”. This logic goes for the home team and for the away team.
The home field advantage can be connected to our everyday life.
Do you feel that you have home field advantage? Do you feel that your support structure is truly supportive, and wants you succeed?
Life is already difficult, and if you do not feel that you have the support that you need to succeed, and feel that you are playing as a “visitor” in a basketball game, then you are much less likely to succeed, or be satisfied, and are more likely to have depression and anxiety, and a host of other mental health illnesses.
Find a way to have a home court advantage. It isn’t the number of people in your life that matters, it’s the quality of the support and cheering that matters.

What Is Telepsychiatry?
There are many platforms that are acceptable modes of tele-psychiatry and laws vary state by state in terms of what types of communications can be used to conduct a psychiatric consultation.
The telecommunications that qualify for tele-psychiatry include video or audio conferencing, done via phone, laptop, or computer.
It's Now Easier To Connect With A Psychiatrist
It is nice that technology is able to provide an extra layer of insulation from the symptoms of these disorders an individual may be struggling with.
Many psychiatry practices operate during standard business hours of Monday through Friday, typically 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. It is rare to get psychiatric consultations outside of these hours, unless you search very hard. This can be problematic if you work during these same hours which most people do.
It would be ideal to see your psychiatrist on a day off, maybe on the weekend, or after you get out of work during the week. It would be even more convenient if you were able to have a consultation with your psychiatrist “remotely” via phone, laptop, or computer. Just go home after work, get settled in and start your appointment, no waiting rooms, you are in the comfort of your own home.
Most people don’t take a day off from work to get an oil change. An oil change is very necessary, but we often find ways to work it into our schedule, either going before work, finding something on the weekend, for those that are really ambitious, going on a lunch break.
Laws Surrounding Tele-Psychiatry
However, with rapidly changing legislature, it is being reformed and allowing patients greater access to psychiatric care. The Ryan Haight Act enacted by the federal government in 2008, required physicians to conduct at least 1 in-person psychiatric consultation before prescribing controlled substances to patients.
However, just recently a new federal law was signed into effect that would no longer require the in-person consultation. The Special Registration for Telemedicine Act of 2018 would allow psychiatrists to prescribe controlled substances via tele-psychiatry services only, no in person consultation required, so long as that psychiatrist registered with the DEA. The DEA will work to finalize the law by October 24, 2019.
This means expansion of tele-psychiatry services. Patients suffering from mental illness may now have greater access to consulting with a psychiatrist. Legislature for the access of tele-psychiatry services vary from state to state, so if this is something you would be interested in, please contact our office to learn more.

Empathy also improves a person’s social value. People are typically highly motivated and inspired by empathetic individuals.
Think of the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Jesus Christ. These are iconic figures we strongly associate with good. As a society we look up to these figures as people who changed the world with their philosophies and actions. All these figures displayed strong empathetic traits.
Empathetic people are considered leaders that we trust not fear, people we turn to for guidance and support, people who add value to our lives and the world.
Empathy & Mental Health
Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and feel what another person experiences.
Empathetic people are able to tap into a wide range of emotions and are able to take on a different perspective with ease. This is effective in managing stress and finding satisfaction in one’s life.
What can help us develop this mind state?
- We have conversations with our friends, family members, colleagues, and strangers routinely.
- “Active Listening” is a helpful practice during conversation.
- Ask open-ended questions to learn more.
- Summarize the other person’s feelings, repeat what they say, helping them
- Maintain eye contact.
- Keep a neutral tone.
Encouraging Others
- It doesn’t matter how small, bits of encouragement in your conversation can make a huge difference.
- You not realize how impactful a small statement of encouragement can have on someone that may be going through a tough time internally.
- Finding common ground and giving uplifting and motivating feedback strengthens your relationships with others.
- Much like words of encouragement, random acts of kindness can have a powerful impact on others.
- These acts of kindness can be small, such as bringing in an extra coffee for a colleague, or simply offering to help someone.
- Acts of kindness help us to stay connected with an empathetic mind state, and by building stronger relationships with others this adds value to our lives.
Alone Time
- Interactions are important, but we all need time to recharge. Having alone time means we are not being influenced by others and we are able to re-connect with feelings we may be repressing.
- Spending time alone doing something nice for yourself such as cooking your favorite meal, listening to music, reading a book.
Connection to Nature
- During alone time, it can be very refreshing to make a connection to nature, going on a hike, going for a walk, helps us to re-charge and being out in nature gives us a peaceful setting to refresh our mind and spirit.
- Meditation and exercise are healthy habits that can also be practiced in nature.
- Being the peacemaker during times of chaos is a nice display of leadership and is a hallmark personality trait of empathetic people.
- You don’t have to get in the middle of arguments and it may be difficult to be a peacemaker in the heat of the moment, however some skills that are helpful is:
- Maintaining neutrality
- Being non-reactive, no opinions
- Asking what would help the person?
- Encouraging them to follow that path
Self-Improvement
- Setting goals for ourselves, even if they are small become especially powerful when the goals are motivated by the concept of self-improvement.
- Typically, our goals have a specific gain which is fine. It is nice to have goals solely for self-improvement and not a tangible gain.
- Goals based on self-improvement helps boost our self-esteem and helps us to know ourselves better.
Practice Honesty
- Life comes with many ups and downs, it is easy to feel disconnected with how we truly feel sometimes.
- We repress difficult emotions as a way to survive the challenging moments of our life, it is human nature.
- Practicing honesty is an important tool in which we strengthen our principles and gain access to a wider range of emotions.
- Empathetic people tend to have access to this array of emotions and are able to develop meaningful connections to others around them, as well as to themselves.
